COASTAL FLOOD PROTECTION Where coastlines are vulnerable, we build resilience.

Our coastlines are among the most vulnerable places on the planet—that’s why it is imperative that we engineer their protection in a responsible manner. At WSP, we start this process by understanding the shoreline as a living system. Our coastal engineers assess erosion and submersion risks using land and marine surveys, state-of-the art modeling tools, aerial imagery, historical site information, environmental habitats and social use characterization. Our teams take these insights to design resilient solutions, such as rock revetments, dune nourishment, breakwaters, groins and bulkheads. Manmade infrastructure is a useful, necessary tool—but we don’t stop there. We embrace the “Living Shoreline” philosophy, which emphasizes working in harmony with nature and people.

That means early and open collaboration with environmental groups, regulators and local voices to ensure our designs are both technically sound and socially supported. This way, we are able to maximize community support and ecosystem integration. WSP delivers flood protection solutions that combine coastal and riverine strategies to build long-term resilience. Our approach includes shoreline and offshore alignments, nature based solutions (NbS) and adaptable phasing to meet evolving climate challenges. We quantify risk reduction and benefits to guide smart investment and planning. Beyond infrastructure, we restore wetlands, manage stormwater and implement erosion control to protect ecosystems and communities alike.
