Hazardous Materials

Environmental issues and health hazards are created by uncontrolled exposure to biological, chemical and physical stressors. WSP’s mission is to anticipate, recognize, evaluate and control exposure to these stressors. Organizations are changing the way in which they operate due to heightened environmental awareness, concerns about occupational exposures, and stringent environmental protection laws and regulations. Our hazardous materials and industrial hygiene specialists draw upon decades of experience to implement strat egies that help our clients mitigate risk, meet compli ance requirements, and provide practical and cost-ef fective solutions to managing hazardous materials. The WSP team of professionals evaluates and controls chemical, physical and biological hazards, as well as potential indoor air quality problems. We leverage our extensive inspection and abatement oversight expe rience to identify the presence, condition and quanti ties of hazardous materials in the air, water and soil to develop cost-effective abatement plans to meet client needs. One material that is always of special concern on con struction and demolition sites is asbestos, a naturally occurring silicate mineral with near-magical heat and fire-resistant properties. While no international ban on the production and use of asbestos exists, many countries have recognized the harmful effects caused by exposure to asbestos and the dangers it poses to public health and safety, and the environment. Stakeholders need to take the necessary steps to address asbestos, hazardous building materials and air pollutants and have in place action plans, interven tion tools and procedures to expose past, present and future environmental issues and health hazards.
