Geotechnical and Materials | SOQ
We focus on using innovative technologies to provide practical, cost-effective investigation, design, and oversight in numerous areas including: z Geotechnical engineering and design z Geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring z Geotechnical for mining z Subsurface investigation and geophysical surveys z Earth retaining structures and ground improvement z Dams, levees, reservoirs and water control structures z Seismic engineering z Deep and shallow structural foundations z Roadway pavement design and subgrade evaluation z Geotechnical soils laboratories
Our geotechnical background encompasses all aspects and phases of a project from feasibility through project implementation. Our integrated team of professionals provides exploration, analysis, and design related to soil, rock, and groundwater as an essential part of most projects. Understanding the engineering behavior of soil and rock is what our geotechnical engineers do best; issues of strength, stability, and durability are assessed, designed, and managed.
21
Geotechnical Engineering and Design WSP provides clients with a comprehensive range of specialty geotechnical services required for the planning, design, and implementation of ground engineering projects, as well as to manage the ground risks associated with all infrastructure projects. Our technical experts design sustainable solutions and engineer projects that contribute to societies’ growth for lifetimes to come. Our geotechnical engineers and earth scientists are specialists in soils engineering, hydrology, geology, geophysics, seismology, and rock mechanics. Through exploratory techniques, we determine the behavior of soil, rock, and water as affected by natural phenomena and construction activities.
Geotechnical Instrumentation and Monitoring WSP has extensive experience with geotechnical instrumentation monitoring programs. Our key objective is to monitor and assess the response of ground and groundwater in existing conditions and throughout construction activities, compare the data against design limits, and identify any potential problems. Instrumentation programs are used to monitor ground and structure displacements, groundwater levels, ground vibrations and stresses in temporary and permanent structural elements during and after construction, allowing rapid implementation of appropriate remedial measures before damage occurs. Geotechnical instrumentation is particularly important for tunnel and other underground projects, during excavation for cut-and-cover structures in an urban setting, during installation of pile and drilled shaft foundations, and for assessing the performance of preloading and other ground improvement measures.
22
Geotechnical and Materials | SOQ
Geotechnical for Mining WSP provides geotechnical investigation, design and construction services for mine infrastructure development. Our services extend from feasibility through detailed design, and from lender technical advisor services related to access and haul roads, foundations for drag line equipment, conveyors, buildings, roadway and railway bridges, construction material investigations, slope stability assessment, and embankment engineering. We provide services for underground and open pit mines and quarries. Our team also investigates mining induced ground subsidence and develops post mining treatment measures.
23
Subsurface Investigation and Geophysical Surveys
For both development and restoration projects, all geotechnical engineering initiatives invariably begin with a site investigation. This investigation of soil and bedrock in an area of interest is completed to determine their engineering properties including how they will interact with, on, or in a proposed construction investigation and assess the of risk to property
infrastructure, humans, and the environment. Over the last 50 years we have provided subsurface investigations and geophysical surveys for industry, municipalities, federal, state and regional government, and developers. WSP has extensive in-house geotechnical expertise and resources. By investigating subsurface conditions, our professionals can determine the physical/mechanical and chemical properties of materials that make up the ground. Our staff employs a range of investigation techniques to evaluate conditions that pose geotechnical risks for an existing structure, planned development, or restoration project. As part of our appraisal, we look at soil and rock properties, the distribution of faults, and the groundwater regime below the area of interest. We do this to understand how they will interact with proposed construction or instability issues. Reliable desk study appraisals and site investigations allow the thorough assessment of the risks posed by site conditions. The subsurface evaluation for a typical project will involve Standard Penetration Testing (SPT) wherein samples are collected using split spoon and Shelby tube methods. Rig-mounted and shallow hand auger borings are also used in establishing and documenting general soil characteristics of the site. Borings are logged on-site by a qualified staff geologist or geotechnical engineer. WSP’s integrated services also include the installation of piezometers and monitoring wells to track groundwater levels and water quality.
24
Geotechnical and Materials | SOQ
Our subsurface investigations can also involve cone penetrometer testing (CPT), dilatometer testing (DMT), and geophysical testing such as ground penetrating radar (GPR) and electrical resistivity. If required, select soil samples from the borings will be sent to our USACE validated laboratory to perform engineering classification tests. We also have the capability to provide more complex geotechnical testing should the need arise including gradation, hydrometer, triaxial shear, direct shear, unconfined compression, one dimensional consolidation, restricted flow consolidation, permeability testing, and others. A comprehensive subsurface exploration program is essential to sufficiently characterize the ground that will support any constructed facility. The quality of the exploration program ultimately dictates the geotechnical design as well as the level of the owner’s risk associated with additional costs due to unanticipated ground conditions encountered during construction. Therefore, proper planning and
execution of the exploration program is crucial. Earth Retaining Structures and Ground Improvement
WSP geotechnical engineers have experience in both the design of new earth retaining structures and the remediation of existing ones. We are experienced with the design of both temporary and permanent wall systems such as sheetpiles, soldier piles, tie back walls, soil nail walls, and concrete retaining walls. The design of the most effective wall system is highly dependent on factors including the wall height, aesthetic requirements, foundation soil conditions, water table location, soil corrosivity, and backfill materials. We are accustomed to tailoring our site investigation to provide a thorough understanding of the site conditions important in determining the most effective earth retaining structure to meet the needs of our clients.
25
